Silicone is pretty amazing! It’s non-toxic, safe in high temperatures, plus it’s soft and flexible too. But if you’re a silicone fan like we are, you might already know that well-loved silicone can get a little stinky if it’s not properly and consistently cleaned.

As parents, we know how easy it can be to forget a dirty bottle in your kiddo’s backpack or find a stray sippy under the couch! Luckily, there are plenty of easy fixes to freshen up your favorite silicone items. Keep reading for our top tips on how to get smells out of silicone…

Why does silicone get stinky?

Unlike hard stainless steel, which doesn’t retain smells (unless unclean), silicone is a soft material. Food oils can cling to the soft surface even after it has been cleaned. Sometimes, they just need a little extra help making their way off. So, let’s help them, shall we?

How can I remove odors from silicone?

We’ve got a few methods for you to try until your silicone is smell-free! But, before you test any of these tricks, we recommend separating your silicone pieces from any other parts. For Pura Stainless sport tops, the silicone pops right out of the stainless steel lid for easy cleaning! And of course, be sure to always follow manufacturer cleaning directions (here’s ours).

Clean it

Sometimes smelly silicone simply needs a more thorough cleaning. Start by giving it a scrub with warm soapy water before rinsing it and putting it through a cycle on your dishwasher’s top rack. You can also try cleaning silicone by boiling the items in water for 5 minutes or steaming them in an electric sterilizer.

Soak it

If these basic cleaning methods aren’t working, your next best bet is to soak the silicone. There are a few easy methods you can try:

  • Soak them in hot water and dish detergent for several minutes

  • Soak them in a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water for several minutes

After soaking, be sure to carefully rinse the items. Note: these are also great preventative measures to help keep your products clean, fresh, and mold-free!

Scrub it

Baking soda makes an excellent deodorizer — plus, it’s totally non-toxic! Mix baking soda and water in equal parts to create a deodorizing paste. Then, rub it all over your silicone products. Let the items sit for several hours or overnight before scrubbing it off. If necessary, repeat the process a few times to see if the smells go away.
