Keeping your home nice and clean is a lot harder than it used to be! That’s because traditional cleaners are not as ‘clean’ as they seem. Masked by the scent of citrus or lavender, you’re likely to find a load of harsh chemicals lurking inside those big plastic bottles — yes even in so-called “natural” or “eco-friendly” products! So, to help you keep your home looking spic ‘n span in a way that is safe for both your family and the planet, we’re sharing our favorite DIY recipes for non-toxic cleaning products! In a hurry? Jump to the bottom for just the recipes.

All-Purpose Powerhouse

Looking for a natural, all purpose-cleaner that is strong enough to disinfect your kitchen without harming your lungs? Grab your favorite glass spray bottle and fill it up with one quarter cup of vinegar, two cups of distilled (or boiled) water, and one teaspoon of either castile soap, Oxiclean, or dish soap. Mix it all up and spray down your surfaces as usual! Need a vinegar-free alternative? Mix four tablespoons of baking soda with one quart of warm water to clean and deodorize your kitchen countertops, appliances and even the inside of your refrigerator!

DIY Detergent

Say goodbye to dangerous multi-colored pods, and hello to our favorite homemade laundry detergent recipe! To make it yourself, add two cups of baking soda and two cups of borax to eight cups of boiling water. Then, dilute one cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with two cups of water before adding it to your pot. Next, add two cups of natural dish soap and top the pot off with eight additional cups of boiling water. Let the mixture dissolve nicely before personalizing it with your favorite essential oils.

Once the mixture cools down and thickens completely, it will have a perfect powdery consistency to store in an airtight glass container for when you need it. Time to start a load? Add one tablespoon of the natural laundry detergent for a normal load or a maximum of two tablespoons for one that’s extra dirty.

Gorgeous Glass & Marvelous Marble

Say goodbye to streaks with our favorite DIY glass cleaner! You’ll need two cups of water, half a cup of white vinegar, and a quarter of a cup of diluted (70%) isopropyl alcohol. Mix it up to use on your mirrors, glass top tables, and windows! For a milder alternative that you can use on marble and mirrors, all it takes is your favorite natural dish soap and some water! Mix a drop or two of soap and about two cups of water. Then, dab a rag in the solution and wipe the surface in a circular motion. If you’re using this on marble or stone surfaces, be sure to dry them with a soft cloth.

Beautiful Bathrooms

Cleaning and disinfecting your bathroom can be quite the task! Luckily, we’ve got a recipe for a non-toxic bathroom cleaner that can still get the job done! Take on your shower or tub’s mold and mildew by spraying vinegar all over. Let dry, then repeat before wiping or rinsing clean! Now for your sink…Mix one cup of water, two cups of baking soda, half of a cup of your favorite natural dish soap, and half of a cup of vinegar. Spray it on and wipe it dry or rinse it clean!

Time to tackle toilets? We’ve got what you need! Take equal parts vinegar and baking soda and let it combine in a container. Once you start to hear it fizz, pour it in the toilet and start scrubbing! Let it sit for about 15 minutes before you flush. For a stronger solution, sprinkle one cup of borax around the bowl and spray with half a cup of vinegar. Leave it overnight and come back to scrub it with a brush in the morning!

Crystal Clear Drains

Clean and clear your drains like magic, the natural way! Take half a cup of baking soda and pour it directly in your drain before slowly pouring half a cup of vinegar on top. You should start to hear and see it fizz and foam! To pack an extra punch, cover the drain and let it sit. After about 45 minutes, take a pot of boiling water and slowly pour it down the drain. For a stubborn clog, repeat the process!

Flawless Floors

Need to give your tiles a good scrub? Here’s the perfect non-toxic cleaning product to make them shine again… Mix a quarter of a cup of baking soda and about a gallon of warm water in a bucket (or your sink with the drain stopped). Use a bamboo brush to get the floors clean and a soft cloth to get them dry. What about wood floors? You’ll need half a cup of white vinegar with one gallon of warm water. Warning! Never use the vinegar directly on the floor without diluting it first. Transform the scent of either of these recipes with a few drops of your favorite essential oil, and voila!

Clean Cutting Boards

Do you have a wood cutting board that needs a little extra TLC? All you’ll need to lighten stains and sanitize it is a lemon and some salt! After hand washing and drying your cutting board, massage coarse salt in a circular motion in the direction of the grain with the cut side of a lemon. Let the mixture sit for around five minutes before rinsing well with water. Then, wipe with a cloth and let it air dry — then…chop away!
