Choosing healthy, sustainable water bottles for your family should be simple. But most bottles on the market contain plastics, PFAS, and other toxic materials — even if they claim to be eco-friendly and free of chemicals! Unfortunately, many families might not know that these dangerous materials could be lurking in the colorful outer coating.

That’s why at Pura Stainless, we innovated the safest water bottles on the market. Each and every Pura product is made of 100% food service grade stainless steel and medical grade silicone – with no paint whatsoever. So, why do we refuse to paint our bottles? Let’s talk about it!

Powder-Coated Bottles

Many popular stainless steel water bottles, like the one shown above with the plastic-lid, are colored with a more durable and chip-resistant coating called powder coat. Often advertised as a more eco-friendly alternative to paint, powder coating is praised by many companies to help sell their products as sustainable. However, the powder used to coat the bottles is made of plastic and/or other industrial materials that is electrically charged and sprayed onto the bottles before being cured with heat or UV light. Unfortunately, this means the coating must be removed before the bottles can be recycled.

Risks

The truth is, both paints and powder coats can contain plastics, PFAS, and other toxic materials that are harmful to humans and the environment. The EcoWaste Coalition warns that reusable water bottles are often decorated with paints containing lead at dangerous levels. And, Sustainability Matters magazine writes that powder coatings can contain up to 50% plastic content that can end up in landfills and in the environment as microplastic particles.
